AIMS also has representation on national and international bodies including the International Federation of Biomedical Laboratory Science (IFBLS), Pathology Awareness Australia (PAA) and the National Pathology Accreditation Advisory Council (NPAAC).
Networking & Educational Opportunities
AIMS members receive discounted rates to a wide range of quality educational and networking events, including scientific workshops, special interest group activities, conferences and workshops. We have also recently launched a series of informative and educational video presentations that are available online to allow medical scientists in rural areas or with busy schedules to stay involved.
To allow members to maintain their knowledge and skills, AIMS offers a number of opportunities for professional development and recognition. The APACE scheme is a voluntary programme for medical laboratory scientists that recognises continuing education, formal courses and a wide range of professional activities that contribute to professional growth.
In addition, the Washington University Medical Training Solutions online training and competency assessment program is available free to all active members of AIMS (except students).
AIMS membership also provides opportunities for you to share your wealth of experience through speaking at events, writing articles and engaging with the AIMS governance processes.
Further professional development is available for Members through the AIMS Fellowship Program, which recognises sector leaders for their experiences and commitment to advancing the medical science profession.
AIMS Fellows (FAIMS) are recognised under the Health Insurance Act 1973 (Cth) for classification as a senior scientist under National Pathology Accreditation Advisory Council (NPAAC) guidelines.

Ensure you stay up to date with the latest news, research and opinions on topics that affect you in your role as a medical science professional.
The Institute publishes the quarterly Australian Journal of Medical Science, which contains papers in the fields of blood banking, clinical biochemistry, haematology, histopathology, cytology, immunology & microbiology as well as related areas of interest to medical laboratory scientists such as epidemiology, public and community health and toxicology.
A national electronic newsletter is also sent to members each month providing updates on upcoming meetings, workshops, and exciting developments in research and innovation.
