Saal / Foley Lectures

In 1988, the Institute honoured two outstanding members who had distinguished careers as leaders in their field of education. This honour was to be known as the Saal/Foley Lecture.

Mr John Saal FAIMS
In 1970 John Saal became Head of the Department of Paramedical Studies at the Queensland University of Technology, and, in 1977, Head of the School of Health Science. He held many offices within the Institute, including Branch and National President, and was National Registrar at the time of his death in 1979. He was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 1969

Associate Professor John Foley
Associate Professor John Foley became the foundation Head of the Department of Medical Technology at the then Western Australian Institute of Technology (now Curtin University), in 1970.
He held many offices in the Institute and served on National Executive for nine years. He was National President from 1976 to 1977.
He retired from Curtin University in 1988 and was elected a Life member of the Institute in that year for his contribution to the advancement of medical laboratory science. He died in 1996.

The criteria for appointment of the Saal-Foley Lecturer should be:

• A person who has distinguished himself or herself as a leader in their field.
• Recognised as an effective teacher.
• Preferably be a medical scientist.
• Where possible, a Fellow of the AIMS.

The Saal/Foley Lecture takes part in National Scientific Meeting programs as a key speaker and the lecture published in the Australian Journal of Medical Science.
