TOPIC: Thalassaemia testing - The influence of changing demographics

Thalassaemia is one of the world's most common inherited blood disorders, with increasing population mobility and migration patterns continuing to influence its prevalence across Australia. As laboratory professionals encounter a more diverse patient population, understanding the evolving landscape of thalassaemia testing has become increasingly important.

This presentation will explore how changing demographics are impacting the demand for thalassaemia screening, diagnosis and genetic testing. Attendees will gain insight into the laboratory approaches used to investigate thalassaemia, the challenges associated with result interpretation, and the role of molecular testing in supporting accurate diagnosis and patient management.

Through case studies, this session will highlight the importance of recognising at-risk populations, understanding genotype–phenotype relationships, and adapting laboratory practice to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse healthcare environment.
