The Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (AIMS) is committed to protecting your personal information. We recognise that your privacy is very important to you and that you have a right to control your personal information. Unless you give explicit consent for AIMS to act otherwise, the following policies govern how AIMS will use and safeguard your privacy.
COLLECTION
AIMS collects personal information only from the individual concerned and holds only such personal information as is reasonable and necessary for us to deliver services to our members and to the wider community.
You may provide AIMS with information directly, such as on membership applications, subscribing to email lists or identifying yourself when using particular services e.g. JobBase. The amount and type of information collected depends upon the services used. The only personal information collected is what you provide.
Information Logged
Our web servers log the following information which is provided by your browser and is used for statistical purposes only:
- the type of browser and operating system you are using;
- the IP address used;
- the address of the referring site;
- the date and time of the visit; and
- the address of the information accessed or downloaded.
In addition, search terms that you enter when conducting a site search are collected but are not associated with any other information collected. We use these search terms to enable us to improve the services that we provide.
Our email server(s) log the following information:
- sender and recipient's email address
- date and time of transmission
- email subject, size and unique message identification
Use of cookies
Cookies are files that a website transfers to your computer for record-keeping purposes, to enhance or customise what is offered or displayed. Most web browsers are set to accept cookies. However, if you do not wish to accept cookies you may configure your browser to reject cookies. USE AND DISCLOSURE OF INFORMATION
Information will be used or disclosed only for the primary purpose for which it was collected. Information provided to us may be used to keep you better informed about the activities and services of AIMS, for example by newsletter, the Australian Journal of Medical Science or email. Individuals have the right to opt out of receiving any of these sources of information.
Personal information will not be used or disclosed by AIMS for a secondary purpose unless that purpose is closely related to the primary purpose and you could reasonably expect the information to be used in that way, or AIMS has a legal obligation to disclose such information.
AIMS will not sell, exchange or release personal information about an individual for commercial gain.
AIMS will not send you unsolicited advertising email. If you no longer wish to receive information you may remove your name from any of our email lists by either following the removal instructions or emailing us at requesting to be removed from a particular email list. Please allow seven (7) days for this request to be completed.
QUALITY OF INFORMATION
AIMS takes reasonable steps to ensure that the personal information collected and used is accurate and up to date. We seek members’ assistance to keep AIMS informed of change of address or other details.
To update or delete your personal information please send any corrections to the AIMS office or by email to . Please provide your first and last names, membership number (if a member), contact phone number and email address.
We will take all reasonable steps to meet any request to have personal information deleted unless it is required for legal reasons.
SECURITY OF INFORMATION
AIMS takes every care to protect personal information from unauthorised use or disclosure and from loss.
You can assist us by ensuring that you maintain the confidentiality of your passwords and accounts.
Personal information will be destroyed or permanently de-identified when it is no longer needed for the purpose for which it was collected.
CONFIDENTIALITY
Personal information is held on confidential data bases maintained by AIMS.
Your information is stored on secured servers that are protected in controlled facilities. Our employees are obliged to respect the confidentiality of any personal information held by AIMS.
ACCESSIBILITY OF INFORMATION
Information held by AIMS about an individual is accessible to that person on request.
